AIB

AIB has one of the largest branch networks in the country offering both personal and corporate banking services. The AIB has bank note issuing powers in the North of Ireland, branches in New York and a subsidiary company in Jersey and on the Isle of Man. AIB is often referred to as AIB Bank – in 1990 it was rebranded and the word ‘Bank’ was printed beneath the AIB letters in the logo – some branches still disply ‘AIB Bank‘ above their doors.

Today the AIB is recognised as one of the ‘big four’ banks in Ireland. Formerly known as Allied Irish Banks Limited, the AIB was founded the September of 1966 as a result of the amalgamation of three large and long established banks:

  • The Provincial Bank of Ireland Limited (est. 1825)
  • The Royal Bank of Ireland Limited (est. 1836)
  • The Munster and Leinster Bank Limited (est. 1885)

In 1991, AIB bought TSB Bank Northern Ireland PLC giving it a significant share in the North’s banking market. At the time, TSB NI had 51 branches throughout the North of Ireland. In 1996 the bank’s UK operations were integrated under the control of one board - AIB Group (UK) PLC with two trading names; ’First Trust Bank‘ in the North of Ireland and ‘Allied Irish Bank (GB)‘ in Great Britain
